Housing Production Declines as America Needs More Homes

St. Paul, Minn. – Housing Affordability Institute, a housing industry think tank, published its annual United States of Housing report today, assessing the state of homeownership and housing affordability. The feature story of this year’s report is the decline in new housing production since 2021, with permitted units of all types in the United States down 17.58% from 2021 to 2025.

“America once valued housing affordability,” said Nick Erickson, executive director of Housing Affordability Institute. “Coming out of the Great Recession, policymakers left the housing industry with little more than low interest rates to support production. Achieving long-term stability in housing production will require deliberate action from policymakers at every level of government.”

This year’s report also features a scorecard for each state, highlighting changes in housing production, affordability and homeownership.
